A Little Q&A on Invisilign

Remember when I said I’d be back soon to talk more about Invisilign? Yea, well, I hope you weren’t holding your breath… I’m basically an Invisilign genius at this point (10 months into treatment), so I thought I’d share some answers to (what I would assume are) frequently asked Invisilign questions.

Q:  Just how invisible are these “invisible trays (aka aligners)?”
A:  Not at all invisible. They are clear and everyone you meet will know you’re wearing them. Most people will be nice enough not to ask you about them though. Compared to metal braces, sure, they’re invisible…

Q:  How much does Invisilign cost?
A: About the same amount as regular braces. Most places will charge you around $5,000. I have pretty great insurance and adult orthodontics is covered so that helped bring down the cost for me. The cost is the same regardless of your treatment time. Warning – the initial cost doesn’t include the retainer (but more on that later).

Q. How long does the Invisilign treatment take?
A: It really does vary person to person depending on the amount of movement your teeth need. I thought my treatment was going to take 10 months, but it will actually be about 14 months when it’s all said and done.

Q: How many hours a day do you have to wear the aligners?
A: My orthodontist recommend 20 hours per day. Pretty much only enough time to take them out for meals. I don’t wear mine when I run any distance longer than 5 miles because I like to use fuel or drink Gatorade. The great thing about Invisilign is that if you don’t get your full 20 hours in, you can take the time onto the end! A prime example or this for me was Thanksgiving. I took my aligners out when we sat down for lunch and didn’t put them back in until that night. I added an extra day to that set of trays and didn’t have any problems.

Q: What are attachments?
A: Attachments are small tooth colored bumps that are glued to your teeth and are guaranteed to freak out your significant other when he/she goes in for a smooch. Their purpose is to help move your teeth into place. The aligners are built with bumps to fit your attachments and pull your teeth. Truthfully, you hardly notice them. I had mine glued on during our engagement pictures and you cannot tell (I did take my aligners out for the photo shoot though).

I don't have a good picture of my attachements so you'll have to google one!

Q: How painful is it?
A: It depends. The Boy considers me to be a bit of a wuss when it comes to pain and I survived. My orthodontist recommended that I always put in a new set of trays at night right before I went to bed. Your mouth will be sore the first day you have a new set of trays in, but you’ll survive. I always made sure to pack soup for lunch on that first day because no way was I chomping on a carrot!

Q: Can you eat with your aligners in?
A: No. This is actually became a fantastic diet mechanism…especially in meetings at work! Since I didn’t want to awkwardly remove my “teeth” in front of my boss, I had to steer clear of treats. I do have some fantastically awkward stories of situations where I’ve been out to eat and realized that, as the food was being delivered, my “teeth” were still in. I was super embarrassed the first time, but I got over that quickly. I’m not the first person who’s had to remove an aligner/retainer to eat!

Q: Can you drink with your aligners in?
A: Yes – but use a straw! Those clear plastic trays can very easily be dyed the color of your Gatorade! TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. I spent more money on straws during my treatment than I have my entire life!

Q:  Do you have to brush and floss before you put your trays back in?
A: According to my dentist – yes. Food can get trapped between your teeth and your trays and that’s how cavities are born. I went out 10 months ago and bought a toothbrush and toothpaste to keep at my desk for an after lunch brush….

That picture was taken yesterday…

I did not even come close to listening to this rule. I’m a pro at taking a nice swoosh of whatever beverage I’m drinking after lunch to clear any residue and then I pop those bad boys back in my mouth. We’re all busy…do what you can…and always take your dentist’s advice over mine.

Q: How do you clean your aligners?
A: Just like dentures :) Seriously – my orthodontist told me I could skip the “special Invisilign cleaning solution” and head down to Walgreens for some Efferdent tablets. I soak mine for an hour a day. I also brush them twice a day with this awesome mini-toothbrush thingy that my mom gave me. I also carry mints…because by day 14 those puppies can be smelling a little weird…

Q: Will I have to wear a retainer?
A: Yes. Yes you will...but probably only at night. Your teeth can continue to move for all of your adult life. If you want to take full advantage of that $5K you spent, you better wear your retainers!

Q: Will my friends and family make fun of me?
A: Yes – they will. My teeth and I have been at the receiving end of jokes MANY times in the last 10 months. It’s a good thing I love those goons!

All The Cool Kids Are Doing It

*If you don’t want to see weird pictures of my teeth, skip this post and go read about my wedding plans or Justin's new(ish) job :)

As I mentioned, I started going through the Invisalign process in January of this year. I wasn’t happy with how much my teeth, especially my bottom teeth, had moved since I started neglecting to wear my retainers from my first set of braces.

I spent A LOT of time online researching Invisalign and decided that if it was good enough for Oprah and Gisele, it was good enough for me.

My online search led me to King Orthodontics in Pittsburgh. They are an Elite (Top 1%) Provider of Invisalign. After my first consultation, I knew I could trust the team at King to get the job done (job being straighten and whiten and teeth before the wedding!).

Invisalign is pretty cool. Basically, you have removable, clear trays that you wear at least 20 hours a day. I have 23 sets of trays and I wear each set for 2 weeks. My total treatment plan is 46 weeks (not counting refinements). My orthodontist gave me 4 sets of trays at a time meaning that I only have to stop in for an appointment every 8 weeks. Invisalign is a “work at your own pace” project. This means that if I need to take my trays out for a meeting, an event, or when I’m sick, I just tack that time onto the end of the treatment. This has worked out really well for me. I’m over 3/4 finished with my treatment as I write this and I have only added about 10 days to my treatment time. I don’t mind the extra days because it is so convenient to not wear my trays when I don’t want to.

SO…for full disclosure…this is what my teeth looked like in January 2014 when I had my x-rays taken.

Teeth

I didn’t plan ahead so I don’t have any close-up pictures of myself wearing the trays at the beginning of my treatment. My orthodontist did recommend that I keep all of my trays so I did pull out the trays from Week 1 and Week 7 to show you a comparison. My top teeth didn’t move much during the first 7 weeks, but I saw a ton of movement in my bottom teeth. Check it out:

I was pretty pumped to see my bottom teeth moving so quickly because that is what bothered my most. I’ll be back soon with some details on my daily Invisalign routine, answers to some FAQs, and some more awesome pictures of my teeth :)

Who out there has had braces/Invisalign trays?

Let's Talk Teeth

I've been meaning to write about this for a while (since December),
but I’m just now getting around to it.

I had braces in high school….two very long years. Once I got my braces off, I wore my retainers pretty religiously…until I went to college. I admit, I stopped wearing them because they were lame and I was lazy (mostly just the latter part). Over the last 4 years, my teeth have moved, A LOT. I really started to get uncomfortable with my smile and made the decision last year that I wanted my teeth straightened before the wedding. After looking into adult braces (no thank you), I spent A LOT of time researching Invisilign. Last December, I finally made the decision that I was going to go for it.

I found a great orthodontist in Pittsburgh and went to a (FREE!) consultation to see if Invisilign would work for me. After looking at my teeth, he determined I was a candidate and we got the process started. I want to share the whole process with you because I am 2/3 of the way through my treatment and I am confident in recommending Invisilign to anyone looking to straighten their teeth without metal braces.

The is my "before" picture from my first set of scans - the technology is awesome!

THAT will have to wait to a later date though, because I need to share my second “teethy thing” with you. Arm & Hammer sent me a Spinbrush Truly Radiant toothbrush and tube of Truly Radiant toothpaste to try out last month. Now that my teeth are straighter…I’d like them to be whiter (I’m so needy!). I’ve never had a spinbrush so I was pumped to try it out. The toothbrush is designed to deep clean teeth and removes 5 times more plaque than a manual toothbrush. The toothpaste whitens, strengthens, and repairs tooth enamel using the unique Arm & Hammer formula.

Awkward brushing teeth pic - for your viewing pleasure!

Honestly, I did not like the taste of the toothpaste and probably won’t buy it again. I’m pretty brand loyal to my Crest toothpaste. The toothbrush however…I am never going back to a manual toothbrush. I love this thing! I also love that it is in my price range and that I won’t be going broke when I need to replace the toothbrush head. I don’t know if it was the toothpaste, the toothbrush, the Invisilign, poor lighting in the room, or an attempt to get me to do a favor, but I’ve recently had THREE PEOPLE tell me that my teeth looked whiter. Seriously though, I can tell a difference after using the toothbrush and toothpaste for the last three weeks and would recommend the toothbrush to anyone in the market for a new one.

If you want to try either the toothbrush or toothpaste, you can click THIS LINK to download a coupon for $0.50 off. As I mentioned, I did receive the toothbrush and toothpaste for free (not the invisilign unfortunately) but all opinions in the above review are my own.

Stay tuned for my Invisilign story…I know that you will all be anxiously waiting on the edge of your seats :)
